Why good writing matters in marketing

Want to get ahead in your career? Strong writing skills are your secret weapon.

From crafting catchy social media posts to creating compelling emails and persuasive presentations, writing is at the heart of almost everything marketers do. It’s not just about cranking out words — good quality writing means having an impact, expressing your thoughts clearly, collaborating effectively, and driving results.

Every piece of communication is an opportunity to persuade, influence, and connect. So if you can master the art of clear, engaging writing, you’ll not only grab attention but also build trust and drive action – inside your organisation as well as outside of it.

But not everyone finds writing easy. If you’ve ever struggled to articulate your ideas clearly, or find the right words to express an opinion, you’re not alone. And many marketers who write as part of their role but haven’t received professional training feel the same. Just remember this – writing is worth investing in; a strong skillset will set you apart and help you succeed in your career.

Why writing skills matter in business

Strong writing isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s a fundamental skill that affects almost every task you do. A study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers found that 73.4% of employers want candidates with strong written communication skills. In fact, strong writing skills ranked as the third most desirable quality in a candidate, just behind leadership and teamwork.

For businesses, skilled writers are invaluable. Externally, good writing boosts credibility, improves brand perception, and increases customer engagement. Internally, it improves efficiency, collaboration and decision-making from clearly-articulated information and ideas.

"Writing is a vital skill and is crucial to your organization. No matter your field, role, industry, or passion, effective writing can help sharpen critical thinking and position you to thrive in your environment."

Why it’s so difficult to improve your core writing skills

Despite what those quick-fix copywriting courses say, improving your core writing ability isn’t easy. It’s a deep-learning skill it takes time to change – and even the best writers are always honing their craft.

This is because writing is a complex skill that involves more than just a good grasp of grammar. It’s about organising thoughts clearly, mastering language, creative decision-making and effective communication. And that doesn’t always come naturally.

Part of the struggle comes from the way we learn language. We acquire language subconsciously, at a young age. We build on this through our upbringing and education as we’re exposed to conversation, different experiences, and learn to read and write. The quality of these influences varies, so we each have our own unique mix of strengths and weaknesses.

This means that when it comes to improving writing, there’s no one-size-fits-all method. Everyone has different skillsets — some of us are great at generating ideas but struggle to convey them clearly, while others might write accurately but struggle to add personality.

On top of that, standard advice on how to be a better writer isn’t always helpful, with vague instructions to “read more” or “write more.”

These can help to a degree, but “writing more” rarely leads to significant improvement in your core writing ability. The same goes for many short writing courses — they often focus on advanced techniques without addressing the foundational skills that most people need to improve.
